Exploring the Future of Multifunctional Rooftops: aRTes Workshop in Turin
On 22 September 2026, a workshop held at Le Fonderie Ozanam and OrtiAlti in Turin brought together aRTes project partners, technology developers, local stakeholders and students to explore how digital tools and innovative approaches can support the transformation of urban rooftops into greener, more functional and accessible spaces.
The workshop brought together R2M Solution and TeamDev, representatives of the Metropolitan City of Turin, students from Fundação Torino – Scuola Internazionale, and local actors involved in the management and use of the spaces.
Exploring the rooftop through digital tools
The workshop provided an opportunity to explore the potential transformation of the rooftop while testing and discussing some of the digital solutions being developed within aRTes.
Among the tools presented was the 3D digital twin of the rooftop at Fonderie Ozanam, developed through a complete digitalisation of the space. The digital model supports the identification of technical constraints and potential intervention opportunities and is designed to integrate real-time sensor data during the next stages of the project.
Participants also explored digital tools designed to facilitate access to information on green-roof regulations, as well as solutions supporting collaborative design and the monitoring of rooftop spaces.
FROM TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT TO USER NEEDS
An important part of the aRTes approach is ensuring that the solutions developed within the project respond not only to technical requirements but also to the needs of those who will use, manage and interact with transformed rooftop spaces.
The feedback collected during the Turin workshop will therefore contribute to the next stages of development, helping refine the project’s tools and approaches based on practical experience and stakeholder perspectives. The activity also demonstrates the broader potential of multifunctional rooftops. Rather than remaining underused building surfaces, rooftops can become spaces where greenery, renewable energy, digital innovation and social interaction come together.
RETHINKING ROOFTOPS FOR GREENER AND MORE LIVEABLE CITIES
Through its pilot activities across Southern Europe, aRTes is exploring how physical and digital solutions can overcome some of the technical, regulatory and governance barriers that currently limit rooftop transformation. The Turin activities form part of this wider effort to develop adaptable solutions and tools that can support building owners, professionals, public authorities and communities in rethinking rooftops as valuable components of the urban environment.
Our partner R2M Solution has published a dedicated article exploring the potential of multifunctional rooftops and presenting the technological innovations being tested within the Turin pilot.
