On 25 September 2026, aRTes joined the European Researchers’ Night in Aveiro, Portugal, where our partners from the University of Aveiro introduced the project to visitors and shared its work on the future of urban rooftops.

The event welcomed 873 visitors and brought researchers and the public together to discover ongoing research, exchange ideas and learn more about projects addressing current urban and societal challenges.

BRINGING ROOFTOP RESEARCH TO THE PUBLIC

During the event, the University of Aveiro team presented aRTes and its approach to rethinking rooftops in Southern European cities.

Visitors were introduced to the idea of looking beyond the conventional use of rooftops and considering how these spaces could support greener, more sustainable and multifunctional urban environments. The presentation also offered a chance to discuss the challenges and possibilities associated with making better use of spaces that often remain underused in our cities.

Taking part in the European Researchers’ Night allowed aRTes to reach people outside its usual research and professional networks and bring the project into a more informal, public setting.

SHARING aRTes BEYOND THE PROJECT NETWORK

Public events are an important part of sharing the work carried out within aRTes. They give project partners the chance to explain what they are working on, hear questions and perspectives from different audiences, and make the research more accessible to the communities it ultimately aims to benefit.

With hundreds of people attending the event in Aveiro, the evening was a great occasion to introduce aRTes to a wider audience in Portugal and start conversations around rooftops, urban sustainability and the different ways cities can make better use of their existing spaces.

A big thank you to our partners at the University of Aveiro for representing aRTes and sharing the project with visitors at this year’s European Researchers’ Night.
