artes project

The aRTes Project is a European initiative focused on transforming rooftops into sustainable, multifunctional spaces that enhance urban resilience. This section introduces the project purpose, and the vision driving its innovative approach to rooftop regeneration.

Who we are

We are a multidisciplinary consortium of universities, research institutes, SMEs, municipalities, and NGOs from across Europe, led by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Our partners span Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, and Cyprus, working collaboratively toward a regenerative, people-centered urban future.

What We Do

aRTes designs, prototypes, and tests new rooftop solutions that blend green infrastructure, photovoltaics, digital tools, and urban farming. We co-create with communities and local authorities to ensure the solutions are inclusive, resilient, and replicable across diverse urban settings.

3

Why

Southern European cities face climate challenges, dense urban development, and underutilized rooftop space. aRTes sees these rooftops as untapped opportunities to enhance sustainability, mitigate urban heat, improve energy efficiency, foster biodiversity, and support social cohesion.

4

Objectives

The aRTes project aims to transform underused rooftops in Southern Europe into multifunctional, sustainable spaces. It develops legal and technical frameworks, prototypes green and solar-integrated rooftop systems, and creates digital tools for co-design, monitoring, and management. The project also explores rooftop use for last-mile drone logistics and supports urban farming through tailored services and a digital platform. By assessing environmental, social, and economic impacts, aRTes provides scalable models for cities aiming to enhance resilience and livability.
