Creating the Building Blocks for Active Rooftops
Work Package 2 focuses on the development of innovative physical solutions that enable the transformation of underused rooftops into active, multifunctional and climate-resilient urban spaces. Building on the regulatory and technical insights generated in WP1, the work package develops market-ready rooftop retrofit systems that combine renewable energy generation, biodiversity enhancement, accessibility and social use.
The objective is to create modular and scalable solutions that can be easily adapted to different building types and urban contexts across Southern Europe. By integrating nature-based solutions, photovoltaic technologies and innovative construction methods, WP2 contributes to the creation of rooftops that actively support urban sustainability and climate adaptation.
Innovative Rooftop Components
A central activity of WP2 is the design and development of a portfolio of complementary rooftop innovations. These solutions are conceived as interconnected elements that can be combined according to the characteristics and needs of each building.
Among the innovations under development is the aRTes Perimeter Wall, a multifunctional safety system that combines fall protection with photovoltaic glazing, integrated greenery, irrigation systems and seating elements. In parallel, the project is developing a Photovoltaic Pergola capable of generating renewable energy while creating shaded and comfortable rooftop environments that encourage social interaction and community use.
Another key innovation is the Raised Floor System, a modular platform designed to support green roofs, photovoltaic installations, urban agriculture and walkable rooftop surfaces. Complementing these interventions, dedicated Rooftop Access Solutions are being developed to safely connect building interiors with newly activated rooftop spaces.
Designing for Sustainability and Adaptability
The physical solutions developed within WP2 follow a common design philosophy centred on modularity, flexibility and circularity. The systems are designed to minimise installation complexity while maximising adaptability to different rooftop configurations and structural conditions.
Furthermore, environmental performance is embedded throughout the design process. Nature-based solutions, renewable energy technologies and sustainable material choices are integrated into each innovation, ensuring that rooftop retrofits contribute to both climate mitigation and climate adaptation objectives.
Testing Performance and Environmental Impact from prototype to real-world application
Alongside the development of the physical innovations, WP2 evaluates their technical, environmental and operational performance through simulations, life-cycle assessments and prototype testing.
Preliminary results indicate significant renewable energy generation potential. The photovoltaic pergola system is expected to produce an average of 230 kWh/m² per year, while the photovoltaic perimeter wall can contribute additional on-site renewable electricity production. At the same time, green roof components demonstrate strong rainwater retention capabilities, supporting urban resilience and stormwater management strategies.
Life-cycle assessments further highlight the potential of these solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout their operational lifetime, reinforcing their contribution to sustainable urban transformation.
